What Is An Ice Dam?

A Problem That Can Cause Permanent Damage

An ice dam is a small or large formation of ice that forms on a roof which prevents the proper draining of water when the ice melts.

Poor insulation and lack of adequate ventilation in the attic space causes the roof deck to heat up and melt the snow above. When it does, the water ( melted snow) flows down the roof and gets backed-up behind the dam with nowhere to drain off. Not only does this pool of water eventually re-freeze into more ice (and continue to grow in size), but in the meantime the water can work its way under the shingles (or other roofing material). At this point, the water can leak into the home or building, and quickly cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation and other internal parts of the structure.

Edmonton Ice Dam Removal Using Steam

The diagram to the left summarizes ice dam formation. As you can see, especially after there is a lot of snow deposited on your roof, this can be quite a problem. There is a significant potential for more damage to be done.

We specialize in removal of ice dams in Edmonton and surrounding areas.

Snow

It snows outside and the snow builds up on your roof. We all know this can be quite a bit in Edmonton. This buildup of snow is the foundations of an ice dam. The snow contributes the water content of the ice dam that will form.

Heat From Attic

As you heat your house in the winter, the heat rises and goes into the attic. The shingles get warm. Snow that has fallen on the now-heated part(s) of the roof melts. The melted snow then flows down the roof until it reaches the part of the roof that is below freezing (most commonly the overhangs). This water re-freezes and begins to form an ice dam.

The dam gets bigger and bigger as more snow melts and re-freezes. Water now begins to pool behind the increasingly large wall of ice.

Ice Dam & Damage

Eventually, the water works its way through the shingles (or other roofing material) and flows through the roof decking and into the attic. From here it can seep through the ceiling, the interior walls, and into the rest of the building.

Let the experts remove the ice dam for you.

Attempting to use a shovel or axe can be extremely dangerous and can cause serious damage to your shingles, roof etc. This can actually cause more damage than the ice dam.

How To Fix It - Using Steam

Steam Removal Of Ice Dams

Steam has proven to be the safest, most effective method of Ice Dam Removal. When Steamtec arrives at your home to remove your ice dam, it will be a small crew of ice dam removal experts operating a steamer, using techniques to remove your ice dam the most efficient and safe way possible. It’s important to distinguish that many companies use high-temperature pressure washers instead of steamers, and some even call them ”steamers” although they are not steamers at all. The safest technique for removing ice on your roof, or performing eavestrough ice removal is using a true steamer.

Reasonable Rates

Ice Dam removal rates that companies charge often appear pricey at first. The cost of removing ice dams is largely reflective of the dangers involved, the laborous nature of the physical removal of heavy ice and the skill and knowledge utilized by the ice dammer to evade issues inherent. Our hourly rate adjusts when it is required for our ice technicians to work longer hours to meet the demand. Typically-sized ice dams can be removed safely at a rate of about 1-hour per liner-10-feet, and generally most ice dam removal jobs are 1-3 hours including set up, take down and clean up. 50-100lb chunks of ice removed from roofs are not left in walking paths or driveways. The reality of ice dam removal costs are: spending a a bit to remove a dam from your home can save you thousands in damages that an ice dam can cause.
